Shipyard "Yantar" was established on the base of the Konigsberg branch of Schichau Werft in 1945 after World War II finishing. Several generations of Kaliningrad shipbuilders put their labour in development of new enterprise and production of hundreds of ships. For more than 50 years of its history "Yantar" has become a famous builder and repairer of the modern war ships and high-effective civil vessels.Today "Yantar" is a modern and dynamically developing enterprise having wide experience in building and repair of vessels and ships of different classes and purposes. "Yantar" is the only Russian shipyard, which is situated in the South-East part of the Baltic region in the nearness of the largest industrial centers of Europe. The city of Kaliningrad is the only Russian ice-free port on the Baltic Sea and the centre of the most western region of Russia owing status of the Special Economic Zone with the developed transport infrastructure.

Naval shipbuilding at shipyard "Yantar" has long lasting traditions. Since 1945 totally 153 naval ships of various classes there had been built at Yantar's slipways including:

Novosti 17 Dec 2010 : The Yantar Shipyard in the Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad will start on Saturday the construction of the first Krivak IV class frigate for Russia's Black Sea Fleet, a Defense Ministry spokesman said. Yantar won a four-year contract on the construction of a total of three frigates for the fleet in October. The shipyard is currently building three frigates of the same class for the Indian Navy under a $1.6 billion contract. "This ship will be named 'Admiral Grigorovich' after the former Russian naval minister [1911- 1917]" the official said.
