Ameland is a municipality and one of the West Frisian Islands off the north coast of the Netherlands. It consists of a sand dunes landscape on the Northsea-coast, a polderlandscape with dyke in the south-south-west-part, and of an open Waddencoast in the south-south-east-direction. It can be reached by ferry from the Frisian village Holwerd in about 45 minutes. On Ameland are touristic facilities. Ameland is a also popular for one-day-trips.
