quarry, mine, limestone quarry
This operation is situated at Daniëlskuil in the Northern Cape. It is our main lime production plant with an installed burnt lime capacity of 1,0 million tons per annum. Four rotary kilns are in operation, the latest being a modern kiln commissioned in 1997.
The main markets are the platinum, gold, iron, steel, ferro-alloys, carbide, road lime, general chemical, uranium, paper, effluent, water-treatment and flue-gas desulphurisation industries.
A technical assistance agreement with Carmeuse, (the 2nd largest producer of lime in the world) provides Idwala with access to the latest technology in the lime industry, including but not limited to advice on lime handling systems as well as the appropriate product choice and evaluation of the technology used in the flue-gas desulphurisation market.
The largest limestone plant of the African company Idwala Lime near Daniëlskuil in South Africa With the installation of a CommodasUltrasort machine in 2006, Idwala Lime took multiple steps towards increasing its production efficiency. Optical sorting now allows limestone to be extracted from the previously discarded layers of low-grade stone. The sorting plant has thus significantly increased the limestone reserve in so far as the lifetime of the mine has doubled. Nowadays less material needs to be mined in order to obtain the same quantity of quicklime, the final product. As a result, the production facility has improved significantly and the amount of waste rock to be hauled and dumped has also halved.
