Zouk Powerplant (Zouk Mikael)

Lebanon / Jabal Lubnan / Juniyah / Zouk Mikael
factory, production, power station, thermal power station

The largest power plant in Lebanon, constituted mostly of gas turbines.

In 1984, Electricité du Liban (the Lebanon electricity board) awarded ALSTOM Power a contract for the construction of unit four of its Zouk thermal power plant

The Zouk thermal power plant (1 x 182MW) is located in the north of Beirut, Lebanon and burns residual oil. It entered commercial operation in 1987. Provisional acceptance was signed in 1989 and final acceptance in 1991.

Its rate of availability is very high (> 90 %) partly thanks to the turnkey general overhauls carried out in 1993 and 1996.

This is a unique case of a power plant being situated inside a town.

The chimneys of the plant have a height of 145 metres.
