church, interesting place, UNESCO World Heritage Site, 12th century construction

Founded by the Novgorod Prince Mstislav next to the prince residency in the town, Saint Nicholas Cathedral is the oldest surviving Russian cathedral dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra, the most revered saint in Russia. In its long history the cathedral has experienced numerous fires and reconstructions.

During the restoration in the 1990's it regained its original shape, including five domes and rounded gable heads of the facade. The surviving remnants of the 12th century frescoes inside the cathedral testify of the high quality of the original decoration and give insights into the painter's initial idea as well as the remarkable peculiarities of these mural paintings.
