Kronversky Bridge (Saint Petersburg)

The Kronverksky Bridge connects Petrogradsky and Zayachy Islands, it is thrown across the Kronverksky Strait in the alignment of the Mytninskaya embankment. It is a nine-span beam structure with a length of 57.5 meters and a width of 8.8 meters.

The bridge supports are wooden frame ones on a pile base, the superstructure is made of metal I-beams. The pavement of the roadway and sidewalks is a boardwalk, the roadway is separated from the sidewalks by a double wheelbarrow. The railing is made of wooden beams.

Pedestrian and automobile traffic is carried out on the bridge, with a limitation of the mass of vehicles of 7 tons per axle.

The bridge was built in 1938 according to the project of the railway engineer P.P. Stepnov.

The need to build a bridge was connected with the improvement of the territory along the shore of the Kronverk Strait and part of the Mytninskaya embankment. There in the 1930s was located the garden of the State House (the former People's House) and the "American Mountains", which burned down during the bombing of Leningrad in the autumn of 1941. Also, the bridge was necessary for the movement of vehicles and the passage of pedestrians to the territory of the Peter and Paul Fortress.

The bridge was a wooden nine-span beam-split system. The superstructure is wooden, and the middle span was covered with a metal beam. Abutments and intermediate supports are wooden, piled. The length of the bridge was 57.5 meters, width – 8.8 meters. The superstructure had a steep construction rise for the passage of small vessels, because of which the bridge received the unofficial name "Humpback". Wooden railings made of poles and struts were installed on the bridge. The bridge was repeatedly repaired in wood.

In 1976, due to the unsatisfactory technical condition, the carrying capacity of the bridge was limited to six tons.

In 1977, the bridge was repaired. The bridge remained a nine-span beam-split system. The wooden superstructure of the ferry was replaced with a metal one, along which crossbars and a boardwalk were laid. Wooden cobblestone railings are installed on the bridge. Wooden abutments and supports have been repaired. The bridge repair work was carried out by SMEU "Lenmosttrest".

In September 2015, there was an urgent need to repair the wooden structures of the Kronverk Bridge, and in the period from October 2015 to January 2016, the crossing was repaired without completely closing traffic. Replacement of wooden supports and flooring of the roadway was made. Wooden structures were treated with antiseptic.

Kronverksky Bridge is located in one of the most popular tourist places in St. Petersburg, because it is through it that you can get to the Peter and Paul Fortress from the Mytninskaya embankment.
