The first fortification, a monastery, dates from the 8th century. The heptagonal fortress that stands to this day was built in the early 14th century. It had irregularly positioned massive towers for extra protection and a moat encircling it, the water of which came from the volcanic hot springs nearby and never froze over even in the coldest winters.
