Locks No. 1 and No. 2, magnificently restored in 1992 by the Old Port of Montréal Corporation, mark the canal's downstream entrance. In the surrounding area, the buildings in Old Montréal and the majestic grain silo reflect the main function of the city and of the first canal, namely to act as a transhipping point between the maritime world and the interior of the continent.
The canal has been designated as a National Historic Site of Canada, officially named the Lachine Canal National Historic Site.
