Founded on August 8th 1854. The intended purpose of the new town was to take the place of the capital San Salvador (which had been badly damaged by an earthquake). This intended purposed was abandoned in 1858, but the town flourished regardless.
The legal name Nueva San Salvador was changed to Santa Tecla as this was the better known name for the city.
