The track is situated on the Oxley Highway, just 3km west of the Port Macquarie CBD.

The kikuyu grassed course is 1600m in circumference and 18m wide, with a straight run of 375m to the winning post.
The track is laid out symmetrically with two 400m straights and two sweeping cambered turns of 400m.
The surface rises gradually from the 600m to the 200m point, and then slopes downwards past the winning post to the turn out of the straight.

Racing is conducted over 1000m, 1100m, 1200m, 1400m, 1700m, 1800m & 2000m. There is an advantage to horses with an inside barrier in 1000m and 1400m events. However, with the banked turns and long straight, winners can still come from well back in the field on the home turn.

The annual Port Macquarie Cup Carnival is conducted from late September to early October,
with the feature race being the $50,000 Carlton Port Macquarie Cup run over 2000m.
