This is the siege ramp built by Silva's X Legion to attack the walls of the fortress. The Romans encamped on both sides and built a siege wall, which can easily be seen around the fort outlined on the desert floor. Then they built a huge earth ramp up the west side and battered their way in, only to find that the Jews had committed suicide shortly before their entry.

This ramp is also thought to be a natural geological formation, and that it was employed by the Romans during their seige of Masada.
