Toornwerd is a small village in the municipality of Loppersum in the northern part of the province of Groningen. The village is between Middelstum and Kantens and counted 136 inhabitants on 1 January 2006. Toornwerd is a partly levelled mould. The village is mentioned in the 10th century as Thornvurd, what can be translated as a thorn covered mould.
