Prosper Lecourtier (1851 - 1924) was born in Meuse, France July 12th 1851. He studied under the great sculptor Emmanuel Fremiet. Very little is know about the personal life of this excellent sculptor other than the record in Lami's Dictionnaire des Sculpteurs de LeEcole Francais of his many exhibits at the Salon where he first exhibited in 1875 until his death in 1924. Lecourtier received a Second Class Medal at the 1879 Salon for his sculpture titled Cheval Arabe, a Third Class Medal in 1880 and a First Class Medal in 1902. He was awarded a Bronze Medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900. The Salon of 1925 lists a posthumous entry of his works. He is best known for his sculpture of dogs but his work encompasses all forms of animals as well as equestrian groups. The Museum Provins displays a model of a Great Dane with pups and the Museum Tourcoing has a braying donkey titled The Forgotten One.
