In 1833 the city of Avignon acquired the Hôtel de Villeneuve-Martigna to house its municipal museum ; space in the former Couvent Saint-Martial being insufficient.

The importance of its collections have merited the Musée de Calvet's inclusion among the thirty-two listed French museums. There are more than 28,000 items on its inventory, divided into domains as diverse as archeology, beaux-arts (painting, sculpture, drawing), decorative arts (gold and silver objects, china and porcelain, tapestries, iron items), and ethnology (Asia, Oceania, Africa). www.avignon.fr/en/musees/calveten.php
