The Helsinki Olympic Stadium, located in the Töölö district about 2 kilometres from the centre of Helsinki, is the largest stadium in Finland, nowadays used for sports events and big concerts. The stadium served as the main venue for the 1952 Summer Olympics when it hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Athletics, the Football Semi-Final and Final, and the Equestrian Prix des Nations. It was built for the aborted 1940 Summer Olympics. It was also the venue for the first World Athletics Championships in 1983 and hosted the World Athletics Championships again in 2005.

The construction of the Olympic Stadium began in 1934 and was completed in 1938. It was completely modernised in 1990-1994 and also renovated just before the 2005 World Championships in Athletics. Its spectator capacity was at its maximum during the 1952 Olympics with an over 70,000 capacity. Nowadays the stadium has a 40,000 capacity and it's increased to 45,000 for concerts.
The tower of the stadium, a distinct landmark with a height of 72 metres, is open for visitors and offers impressive views over Helsinki.
