The modern settlement of Koylık was known as Antonovka until 1993. The name refers to the ruins of the medieval town of Qayaliq, located on the hills northeast of the modern settlement. Qayaliq was an important regional center of commerce during the Middle Ages. Willem of Rubruck, an envoy of King Louis IX of France to the great khan Möngke, passed through Qayaliq in 1253, just after Möngke had given the area to Qayidu, and noted the town’s markets, churches, and temples. The area has been subjected to annual archaeological excavations since 1998, which have uncovered the remains of Buddhist and Manichaean temples, a mosque, and a tomb complex.
