Thorn Island is dominated by a fort that was built in 1854 to defend Milford Haven from the French Navy. On 30 January 1894, the three-masted ship Loch Schiel was stranded and subsequently sank on Thorn Island while seeking shelter from gale, on voyage from Glasgow to Adelaide and Melbourne. All 33 aboard were rescued by Angle lifeboat
