US Navy White Beach Port Facility

Japan / Okinawa / Haebaru /
military, seaport, United States Navy, United States Marine Corps

Constructed in late 1945 by US Navy engineers as the principal seaport for the Okinawa-based staging area for the upcoming Invasion of Mainland Japan, the White Beach Port Facility covers just under one square mile of land and features two large piers that extend into Nakagusuku/Buckner Bay. The Southern or "Navy" pier is 2,790ft long by 79ft wide and is capable of berthing nearly any vessel in both the JMSDF and US Navy Fleets, while the Northern "Army" pier is 1,480ft long by 79ft wide.

Now used primarily as a staging area for the Okinawa-based 31st US Marine Expeditionary Unit, the facility also plays regular host to visiting warships of the US Navy, JMSDF and allied nations.

Was there in 1956 & 1957 - USS Hornet CVA- 12 , USS Wasp CVA- 18 and had to anchor out because there was no docks or water deep enough that would let us get close to shore . There was one cement block building on shore that acted as our enlisted mens club so we could have a beer .

I was there Sept 1970 - March 1971 with U.S. Navy Beach Jumper Unit ONE under the Naval Special Warfare (NSW) command. I worked in the ET shop bldg. which had a barracks bay, engine shop and carpenter shop all under 1-roof. The bathroom/showers were located in a building near the athletic field and about 50-yds from the barracks. Was an interesting tour. Larry Markaverich ETN3 U.S.N. Beach Jumper Unit ONE

There in 1964 with USS Berkeley, DDG-15. Moored at Army pier (no USN pier then). Not much there but munitions bunkers. Nearest liberty was in Naha City. There was a seadrome in the bay (for P5's). A P5 and the USS Carrituck, AV-8 was moored there...a seaplane tender. It looked like a ship with a giant insect!

Beautiful place to stay. Choose the cabins up on the hill for best experience.

Was there in 1958 aboard USS Cavalier alongside army pier. Our shipboard landing party led by the 1st Lt. walked about 5 miles carrying weapons-- I carried a BAR. Rained like crazy there and the mud was like glue.
