Location of the May Day Melee on May 1, 2007. Pro-illegal immigration protesters were shot with rubber bullets and bean bags by the LAPD. Some of the protesters, wearing camouflage pants and bandannas, were throwing bottles and rocks at officers, which prompted them to force the protesters to leave. When some refused, force was used on them.

The park was designated as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #100 on May 01, 1972.
