The castle is the largest-such structure in Gotha and the state of Thuringia. The Magdeburg fortress builder Andreas Rudolphi oversaw the building of the castle from 1643 to 1654 by Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Gotha. Residence of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, see:
