Originally built in 1878 in the Italian renaissance style, the hotel was the first in Riga to feature electric lights, elevators and telephones. The original building was completely destroyed during World War II. It was rebuilt by the Soviets in the 1950s in the neoclassical Stalinist style. Because of its historical significance, the Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga has been listed as an architectural monument by Riga's authorities.
