Formerly known as Winthrop University Hospital founded in 1896, NYU Winthrop Hospital is a 591-bed university-affiliated medical center offering sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic care in virtually every specialty and subspecialty of medicine and surgery.

Located next to the railroad tracks for the convenience of patients arriving by train from eastern Long Island, the Nassau Hospital complex was originally designed by Richard Morris Hunt. Its first wards were named for its major patrons, the Vanderbilts, Harpers, and Belmonts. It was later named Winthrop Hospital after Robert Winthrop of Old Westbury.

In 2019, NYU announced the establishment of NYU Long Island Medical School which will offer a three-year program offering full-tuition scholarships to students and focus on training primary care physicians. In 2020, the name was unexpectedly changed from NYU Winthrop Hospital to NYU Langone Hospital - Long Island.
