The " Binger Hole" is a bottleneck of the Rhine river. It is a river strait at the breakthrough of the Rhine which is shallow in spots with shaos and reefs. Once this stretch was so narrow that it was impassable, forcing goods between Geisenheim (or Rüdesheim)and Lorch to be transported on land until artificial fairway was constructed in the Middle Ages.
