Add category
One of only two inhabited islands (population: 130 as of December 2006) in the Sound of Harris. There is strong evidence that points to Berneray being inhabited since the Bronze age, and possibly before. The island is scattered with ancient sacred sites, stone circles, signs of Viking inhabitation and historical buildings, some several centuries old. Berneray is especially known for its beaches on the east and west side, and for the unspoilt machair that covers much of the west of the island.
