The song school was built in 1885 when it became apparent that a rehearsal space was needed for the choir of St. Mary's. It was designed by John Oldrid Scott, the son of the Cathedral's architect Sir George Gilbert Scott.
The inside of the building is quite simple, with a Henry Willis organ taking up almost the entire west wall, and with murals by Phoebe Anna Traquair.
It was decided in 1933 to restore the song school, especially the murals. The masonry, roof, the windows, plumbing, heating and lighting were also restored.
Since its reopening in 1998 by the Princess Royal, it has held choir rehearsals every morning during term-time, and is also used for organ practice by pupils of St. Mary's Music School.
