History: The Chester Hotel was built by five men who had formed the Public House Association in 1841. It has had several different owners until it was bought by Frank Smith in 1885 for $4500. He made many improvements to the original building, and the Chester House, as it then known, became very successful. On the fourth floor was fine hall with a spring dance floor. In 1903 a fire destroyed the peaked roof and the fourth floor, and a flat roof was built. In 1936 the building was turned into a residence, and many changes were made to the exterior. Kim S. Senay bought the house in 1976, and worked to restore the original appearance.
