Confederate forces under D.H. Hill defended these passes in a delaying action against assaults by the Union Army of the Potomac's Right Wing under Ambrose Burnside, including Hooker's I Corps and Reno's IX Corps. General Reno was killed and future President Hayes wounded at Fox's Gap. Although a tactical victory for the Union, the delay won time for Lee to both concentrate his widespread forces and to capture Harpers Ferry (with its garrison and armory) before the Battle of Antietam on September 17th.
