Losiny Ostrov National Park "Elk (or Moose) Island" was created in 1983 on the land which since ancient times served as the strictly guarded hunting area of Russian Grand Princes and Tsars.
Losiny Ostrov National Park created in 1983 in an area of 116.21 square Kilometers, is the first national park of Russia, located in Moscow and Moscow Oblast. The decision of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR formed this national park. Forest occupied 96.04 square Kilometers of which 30.77 square Kilometers fall within the boundaries of Moscow city (greenbelt of Moscow). Other land types in the park include 1.69 square Kilometers of water and 5.74 square Kilometers of swamp. An additional 66.45 square Kilometers is reserved for expansion of the park.

Out of the total area, 53.94 square Kilometers is protected and is closed to entry, 31.30 square Kilometers is open for restricted visits along established routes for training and excursion and 29.81 square Kilometers, is open for mass entry for Recreation. The most picturesque locality is on the southwest of the park.
