Coal-fired Power Plant
300 MW, Under Construction
(2014 commissioning)
MANILA - Aboitiz Power Corp. has sought regulatory approval for the construction of connection facilities that will link its coal-fired power plant in Davao to the Mindanao grid.

Through wholly-owned unit Therma South Inc., AP filed an application before the Energy Regulatory Commission for the construction of power lines and other related assets worth an estimated P80 million.

The facilities will be used to connect TSI's 300-megawatt coal power project to the Mindanao grid, which is suffering from persistent power disruptions because of insufficient generating capacity.

"The urgent need for additional capacity in the Mindanao grid and the insufficient levels of power reserve and supply merit the issuance of a provisional authority so that the connection assets may be constructed in conjunction with the [coal plant]," TSI said.

Last July, TSI entered into construction, supply and coordination contracts with local and foreign contractors for the facility's construction after securing the approval of the Davao City Council and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Located in Barangay Binugao, Toril District, Davao City and Barangay Inayawan, Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur, TSI's coal plant will use circulating fluidized-bed technology to minimize emissions.

TSI targets to complete the $546 million coal plant by 2015.
