Located in the heart of the City of Syracuse, Downtown is the hub of economic activity for Central New York. Downtown is home to several major financial institutions, law firms, accounting and insurance institutions, the local newspaper, as well as a variety of small businesses employing 30,000 people. It is also home to roughly 2,500 residents who enjoy walking to work, entertainment and restaurants, cultural activities, shopping, and outdoor festivals and events. Downtown Syracuse is broken down into three areas: Armory Square, Downtown East Business District and Hanover Square.
Armory Square is Downtown's premier restaurant and specialty retail district. Visitors can find clothing and accessories, jewelry, original art, a chocolate factory, bakeries, and other specialty retail shops. Located in a 19th century warehouse district, Armory Square is one of New York State's brightest examples of urban renaissance. Its borders include the Museum of Science and Technology on Jefferson Street to the south, Onondaga Creek to the west, Washington Street to the north, and Clinton Street to the east.
Syracuse's first commercial district, Hanover Square, was the site of the original Village of Syracuse. It is now listed on The National Register of Historic Places. Many of the upper floors of its historic buildings have been converted into loft-style apartments, offering residents a European lifestyle where they can enjoy an outdoor cafes, live entertainment, or an afternoon in the park right outside their front door.
