Wullenweber Shortwave Radio Direction Finding Antenna
This site has been released from US control and replaced at a new site. See if you can find it on future satellite images. A Wullenweber is a special type of goniometer or phased array antenna. It is capable of receiving all shortwave radio frequencies between 3 and 30 MHz (approx) from all directions simultaneously. At times as many as 5000 (e.g. Rhode & Schwartz) receivers were connected to this antenna. Each receiver can be tuned to separate frequencies and aimed in different directions. Various 'stunts' can be performed with this antenna including nulling out interference from specific directions. By using taped wideband signals from more than one antenna historical direction finding and interception of 40 year old communications is possible. US Military agencies in conjuction with the NSA operate several of these sites around the world. See also, Misawa, Japan.

  • This facility has been shutdown and the land returned to Okinawan control. However, a brand new facility like this has been built just west of Camp Hansen.
