suburb, draw only border
Named for the Military blockhouse constructed here in the 1860s as part of the army defences of Auckland during the period of the Waikato Wars.
The site at the Whau South was chosen because it was close to the Whau Portage which was the route favoured by northern Māori tribes between the two harbours.
the elevated cleared 12-acre (49,000 m2) site provided an unobstructed view towards the Manukau Heads, the source of possible attack from southern Māori tribes.
