Codigoro is a big centre of the Basso Ferrarese, the wide area of the land reclamation, whose territory abounds in drainage systems for water control. Its economy is based on agricolture although in the last years its industrial settlement has acquired a certain importance particularly in the field of farm products processing. The city's name come from Caput Gauri, the name of the medieval centre, founded where the river Po forked and gave rise to the branch of the Po di Goro.
