Al Bayda's history stretches back to Ancient Greece, when it was known as Balagrae One of the greatest attractions in the city today is the tomb of a famous companion of the Prophet Muhammad, Ruwaifi bin Thabit al-Ansari
Al Bayda is also famous for the neighbouring areas of Shahad and Susah; the 2000 year old ruins of Cyrene are located in Shahad, whilst Susah is a seaside resort. Al Bayda's climate is considered by many Libyans to be the most pleasant in the country.
