This building is now the home of JACK Cleveland Casino, known before May 2016 as Horseshoe Casino Cleveland, the first casino in the state of Ohio. It is owned and operated by JACK Entertainment, a joint venture between Caesars Entertainment and Dan Gilbert's JACK Entertainment. It has 96,000 sq ft (8,900 m2) of gaming space. The casino has 2,000 slot machines and 89 table games. The casino is open 24 hours a day and is completely smoke-free, compliant with Ohio law. Since the casino has limited dining options, JACK has partnered with nearly a dozen downtown Cleveland restaurants. The casino first opened on May 14, 2012 but this building has long been known as the home of Higbee's Department Store.

Higbee's once battled with Halle's (the Halle Brothers Company) to be Cleveland's preeminent department store. The "Higbee & Hower Dry Goods" store was founded in 1860. In 1929 it was acquired by the Van Sweringen brothers, who moved the store to their new $179 million Terminal Tower complex on Public Square, partly in response to pleas from women who wished to occupy homes in their new suburb of Shaker Heights and ride the Vans' new railroads into the city for quality shopping.
Before suburban shopping malls, a trip downtown to Higbee's and Halle's was a major event. Now they're both long gone. After several name changes Higbee's Public Square store closed for good in January, 2002.

Even if you're not from Cleveland there's a good chance you're familiar with Higbee's. It "played" the department store in the 1983 movie made of Jean Shepherd's "A Christmas Story." It's where Ralphie got the boot from Santa Claus while wishing for a Red Ryder BB gun. Higbee's Santa becomes one of several characters in the movie who utter a version of the immortal line, "You'll shoot your eye out, kid."
By the way, the BB gun Ralphie covets, an "official Red Ryder carbine-action, two hundred shot Range Model air rifle BB gun with a compass in the stock and a thing which tells time" never really existed; Jean Shepherd said that was what he remembered from childhood. The real-life equivalent is the Red Ryder BB Gun made by Daisy Outdoor Products since 1938, still in production and available for about $45.
