3977 Center Street
Piru, CA 93040

David Cook originally laid out Piru City east of Piru Creek. However, when he
could not convince Southern Pacific to build a railroad to the town, he moved the town to its present location.
Cook, a devotedly religious and temperate man, deeded the depot property over to the
railroad with a restriction against liquor selling and consummation.
The railroad was important in not only shipping farm products out, but also in delivering needed materials to the rancho and nearby oil fields.
In 1899, the monthly average of freight shipped to Piru was 500 tons.
The two story commercial structure to the north served for a time as a courthouse.
The small wooden gas station was originally called Al’s Service.
It and the old Ford dealership to the south are the only remnants of a time when Center
Street was the main highway between Saugus and Ventura.

Southern Pacific Passenger Trains stopped using the Piru Station in 1938.
Through service through town ended service in 1953.
