This cast iron centre piece was made by McFarlane & Company of Glasgow as a fresh water fountain and cattle trough in 1898. The dome was originally surmounted by an eagle, however, for reasons best known to themselves the Black and Tans shot it off! In 1929, the fountain was replaced by a figure of Christ to honour the centenary of Catholic Emancipation. Fifty years later, in 1979, it was restored to honour the visit of Pope John Paul II to the Liberties.
