What is now the CIE Freight Depot was designed by John Skipton Mulvany (1813-1870) as one of Dublin's four railway termini. Completed in 1850, the imposing building was built overlooking the Royal Canal harbour, a pontoon bridge across the canal giving access to the station. In 1877 the railway company was granted permission to close 150 yards of the canal branch and to fill in the harbour - the site of the present car park.
