Panfilov War Memorial (Almaty)

Kazakhstan / Almaty / Almaty
 memorial, monument

An eternal flame, with a massive sculptural group to the west in memory of the 28 soldiers from Almaty, of the Panfilov Division, who died in battle against Nazi tanks near Moscow in 1941. To the north and south are memorial walls and sculptural groups in memory of the wars of 1941-1945 -- World War II, and 1917-1921 -- The Russian Revolution. These sculptural groups are not beautiful, but rather, they effectively convey the brutality of war and the agony of its victims. It has become a ritual for couples to lay flowers on the reflecting stone base of the eternal flame.
