restaurant, bar
The building now occupied by the Cafe en Seine bar and restaurant has a famous history. In 1798, after the aborted uprising, French prisoners of war were kept here. One of those awaiting removal back to France was a six-foot tall amazon of a woman who is believed to have been the inspiration for the Statue of Liberty. In the early nineteenth century it was a high-class bordello, one of the clients being King George IV. It later became occupied by a Mrs. Russell, a dressmaker, who once made a gown for Queen Victoria.
