The stone plaque, erected by the National Graves Association, reminds us that in this house, the former castle guardroom, on 21 November 1920, three men, Dick McKee, Conor Clune and Peadar Clancy were tortured and killed by the Army after being arrested at Seán Fitzpatrick's house in 36 Gloucester Street. The men had been betrayed by an ex-British soldier, who was subsequently executed in the Five Lamps, North Strand Road.
Although the British claimed the men were "shot trying to escape", a medical examination of Conor Clune's body showed that he had been shot 13 times in the chest.
