The present structure is a pastiche replica of the original Ballast Office which had a four-foot diameter copper ball with a wooden pole through the centre. This was connected by electricity with the Observatory at Dunsink and was set to drop every day at one o'clock Greenwich time. As Dublin was on Dunsink time (25 minutes earlier than London), the ball fell at 12.35. The office is mentioned in the 'Lestrygonians' episode of Ulysses.
