The River Sence gets its name from an Old English word meaning 'cup', signifying a copious flow of good drinking water. It begins life as the Coplow Brook on Life Hill, near Billesdon, and flows into the Soar near Enderby Bridge by Jubilee Park on the B582.
Until the 1930s, the river in Church Road was crossed by a ford which, in the nineteenth century, according to William Bithrey, a piano tuner from Leicester who often visited Great Glen in the course of his work, was often impassible 'without the risk of being drowned'.
