In 1831, Pedro Castle was primarily the private residence of William Eden II, a prominent Caymanian. It was also used as a place of official meetings, a jail, and at times a court of justice. On December 5th of that year, the leading inhabitants of Grand Cayman gathered here to declare that the "better government" of the Caymanian people could be achieved only by establishing an elected legislature. The first election occurred five days later. Caymanian democrazy was born.
