In 1856 this site was reserved for a mental asylum. By 1871 the Willsmere Hospital, also known as the Kew Lunatic Asylum, was completed. In 1988 the hospital ceased operating and sold for Private Development. By 1994 Willsmere Apartments were available to the public. Willsmere Hospital is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
