Ruins of a 12th century moated castle, founded by the Counts of Flanders. In 1254 Margaret of Flanders enlarge the castle in the next century more or less dilapidated but was in January 1389 restored and expanded into a castle with seventeen towers by 'Pilips de Stoute'.
The castle that had served to include storage of the charters of Flanders, was largely destroyed in 1583 by 'Marnix van Sint-Aldegonde'. The remaining towers are to be used in 1647 as a state prison. The castle was then, until 1748 used as a military bulwark, but already heavily infested and was never recovered.
