Acre rock is a local's term for the approximately 1-acre sized rock that jets from the ground adjacent to this location. In the 1990s, software mogul John McAfee built a sprawling mansion near the rock, with commanding views of Pikes Peak. The mansion and surrounding property were later sold at auction for a fraction of the cost of construction, only to later be foreclosed on, which set a record for Teller County's largest residential foreclosure.
The 10,000-square-foot home sits on about 280 acres. The mansion has five bedroom suites, nine fireplaces, hand-carved doors, flagstone floors and unobstructed views of 14,110-foot Pikes Peak. The surrounding compound abuts the Pike National Forest and also has three guest homes, two guest apartments and nine guest cabins, for a total of 19 bedrooms on the estate.
The contractor had this to say when recalling the building:
“I personally worked on this house doing the plumbing and heating under John’s complete direction. He is one of the nicest people you can ever meet in person. Very down to earth. The tub is one solid piece which was shipped from Europe. The walls are a Mayan pattern stone about 2” thick and this was his own design. He had the company create all the stones on the wall. The walls are also 10″ thick concrete. The door to the master bed room is on a center pivot with an other nice pattern design on it. The whole addition is heated with in-floor heating so it is aways warm to the feet. On a personal note both John and I had talk about the local art community which he enjoyed to visit the Business Of Art in Manitou Springs. John was in my opinion both smart and playful all his life from the talks we had.”
