Trace of the Otis Elevating Railroad

USA / New York / Palenville /

This is the location of a inclined, cable, railroad which connected the Catskill Mountain Railroad with the Ulster & Delaware R. R. & the Catskill & Tannersville Ry. These were (with the exception of the U & D) narrow gauge lines. The Catskill Mountain R. R. ran from the boat landing at Catskill to Cairo, with stops a various towns, including the connection to the Otis. The Otis carried passengers up the escarpment, its upper station very close to the Catskill Mountain House. From there the "Huckleberry" train (said to be so slow you could get off to pick huckleberrys and then hop back on) served hotels to Tannersville.

The cut is still very evident, and its current use, for a high-tension power line, keeps it cleared.
