Houses owned before the war by the Polish railroad authority were used by death camp administration during the war. The area is also the site where the Forester's house stood. When the camp was closed in 1943 and Nazi officials tried to hide the mass graves evidence in Sonderaktion 1005, digging by locals hunting for possible valuables in the mass graves scattered bones and remains on the surface. Germans revisiting the abandoned site decided to keep a permanent presence on site to guard against more such embarrassing activity. A Jewish house from across town was dismantled and relocated here for occupation by watchmen ---Ukrainian staff who would tend the trees planted all over the flattened grounds of the former camp.
