Hamilton Cove Condominiums / Hamilton Cove Seaplane Base (site) | gated community

USA / California / Avalon /
 gated community  Add category

Prior to Hamilton Cove becoming a private, gated residential development consisting of condos and vacation rentals, it was once the old Amphibian Airport (1923-1941), where sea planes landed and delivered mail and newspapers for the City of Avalon two coves away. It was also once used as a boatyard. There are several facilities such as tennis courts, an 18 hole putting course, croquet court, pool, jacuzzi, gym, volleyball, BBQ, pier, and small beach with public restroom facilities. A small part of a building from the old Amphibian Airport still exists on the property close by the waterfront and is used to rinse off ocean salt after swimming.

  • This was definitely the old Amphibian Airport which had a turnaround for seaplanes. It was also once used as a boatyard. Please study history of this area as written by Ema I. Ritter in her book Life at the Old Amphibian Airport rather than making a rude and uninformed comment on this area. The Ritters lived in Hamilton Cove well before it was ever developed by the Santa Catalina Island Company into what is now known as the resort community of Hamilton Cove Condominiums.
